Linguists are convinced that two tenses exist that is present and past tenses, however course books and materials indicate twelve tenses. There are three different times in English that is the past, the present and the future. Each of the three times has four aspects which include simple,continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. These result in to tenses such as present simple, past continuous and future perfect making it twelve in all. Form shows the affirmative, negative and question of the tense or grammar point. It is useful when identifying tenses and outlining student grammar errors. Usage shows how and under what circumstances the tense or grammar point is used. Teachers should be aware that some errors are predictable. This is useful in a way that it enables us to formulate correction strategies and examples in advance.It is very important that teachers use the activate stage while teaching their learners as this will encourage communicative use of the tense or grammar point.
