This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This lesson crystallises the two productive aspect of language learning: speaking and writing. In most adult english classes, they are taught side by side. However, when people acquire english as a first language, they are often exposed to a couple of years of daily verbal communication before actually starting to read or write. Thus, there is already a basis for writing because spoken language has been mastered to an extent. I have learnt methods for eliciting speech and writing in a class in a way that is fun and enjoyable for students and a systematic way to order these activities. I have also learnt how to be sensitive to the learning needs of the students, for example not correcting mistakes immediately when aiming for fluency but instead allowing the student to gain confidence and eventually self-correct. I have also learnt how to give feedback in a way that reaps productivity for the students and lastly, how to add games to the repertoire of classroom activities to maximum effect.
