Lesson planning has several uses, such as monitoring student progress, recording class activity for the future, and anticipating problems that might occur during class time. While different people have different ways of planning, there is some general information that should be included in a lesson plan. These include the date and time, for record-keeping purposes, and student and teacher objectives. Student objectives deal with what the teacher expects the students to have learned by the end of the lesson. Teacher objectives concern skills that the teacher would like to work on personally, such as organization or giving instructions. Lesson plans need to contain a variety of skill-building exercises so that they are not only focused on one thing like writing, speaking, or building vocabulary knowledge. Finally, while it is important to estimate the amount of time each phase of the lesson will require, the lesson plan needs to remain flexible because a class may need more or less time for any given phase.
