Some of the most common problems that TEFL teachers face are reluctant students, large classes, first classes, classes with mixed abilities, and trouble with listening texts. In new classes it is important to establish rapport, find out the students language abilities and aspirations, and to start with something fun. At the beginning of each class, a warmer activity will help to motivate and inspire students. Dividing classes into groups according to ability is one way of dealing with mixed ability groups. The teacher may also want to pair stronger students with weaker students. To get reluctant students to speak, using pair and group work as well as structured practice may be helpful. Encouraging students to use English as much as possible and discouraging use of native language in the classroom is also important.
