This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
. There are many different methodologies that have been used to teach english as a foreign language such as audio-ligualism (habit-formation through conditioning), PPP (good for teaching simple language at lower levels), tasked-based learning (students given a task to complete), the silent way (with use of colored rods to represent different aspects of the english language) etc... There is not one best approach, but rather it depends on our individual circumstances.
A lesson must be organized to include 3 main stages Engage, Study and Activate. Engage is a stage where the teacher wants to arouse students' interest and should be fun and engaging, rather than about teaching the students something new. The Study portion is aimed to focus on completing activities that focus on the language. This can be achieved by having the students complete worksheets, word searches, filling in gaps etc. The final stage, activate is the portion of the lesson where students should be using as much English as possible to engage in a dialogue through role-plays, communication games, and debates. In a lesson the stages can be repeated throughout as necessary but should begin with the engage stage and finish with the activate stage.
When giving feedback to your students it is important to remain positive rather than pointing out only mistakes and errors. Corrections should be first attempted by the student themselves, then by other students, and finally by the teacher.
