This unit brings ESA back into focus and shows how a teacher can use this method to teach students new vocabulary and new language structures. When learning vocabulary and language structures, it is important to know how to use them, their meanings, how they interact with other words and structures and for structure in particular, its forms and patterns. Language function is also vital to teaching a new language. It teaches the students the appropriateness of the language in terms of formal, informal, and technical speech. Without these three language functions, it is difficult to learn a new language. These functions are the basis of languages.
The ESA structures - Straight Arrow, Boomerang, and Patchwork - are all effective in teaching each of these aspects of a new language. It is up to the teacher to decide which structure will benefit the class the most. They must base their decision on what they are teacher, how new the material is, and the effectiveness of past lesson designs.
