This chapter was an interesting insight into conditionals and reported speech. These are two things that are definitely intuitive for native English speakers, but may be very confusing and hard to grasp for ESL learners. I realised just how complicated they can be: for example, the tense changes between reported and direct speech is surely something that will be hard for some ESL learners to grasp. Learning about the different rules of the conditional and reported speech patterns has been useful. In particular, the Teaching ideas and activities has given me a deeper understanding of potential ways to teach this set of topics.
