It is important for teachers to evaluate their students. Using different types of tests can give teachers different information. Placement and diagnostic tests give strong background information - how much a particular student knows already. With this information, language schools can properly place students in the appropriate course and teachers can plan appropriate lessons given what the majority of the students already know or don't know. Progress tests help the teachers recognize whether or not their class is retaining the content taught in class. Depending on how many times the class met a week, quizzes can also help teachers and are less stressful for the students. Plus, quizzes can be put together to form a progress test. Ultimately, the goal is to prepare students for external exams, which upon completion grants english language learners admission to universities or employment.
