This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit deals with the use of coursebooks. I found the unit interesting and somewhat obvious. The general theme is that coursebooks are ok to use but that they can be outdated, irrelevant, contain lessons that may not specifically pertain to the students, and they can be boring. The unit suggests supplementing
coursework that may not be suitable with lessons planned by the teacher, and looking at coursebooks with a critical eye. While I agree that depending purely on a coursebook can make a teacher lazy, I think that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. By using a coursebook you can help ensure that your students are learning the same things that other students are learning, and you can better gauge progress from a scale set by professionals rather than the teachers subjective experience.
