This unit discussed how to set up a classroom and the position a teacher should take when giving a lesson. It also discussed how to build rapport and discipline in the classroom. I learned that the positioning of desks and students could interfere with the learning process. A horseshoe or circle classroom is more intimate and will make students feel more at ease. It is easier to get the attention of the whole class if they are not partnered near another student who could distract the or he or she does not get along with. Also, the teachers position within a class can affect the student's willingness to learn. A teacher can use more than just their voice to control discipline in a classroom; a look or a gesture can be just as effective as calling a student out. Building better rapport with students can help with discipline issues before they arise. If a student respects a teacher they are less likely to act out.
