Reading and listening are extremely important skills when it comes to learning a new language. Without mastering how to teach the best ways to use these tools, learning a new language would be near impossible. These are how we take in information before processing and reproducing it. There are different ways to go about using these skills: predicting, scanning, skimming, searching for details, and deduction from context are all ways to hone in on the most important aspects of whatever it is we are reading or listening to. When it comes to teaching how to do these things, it is important to focus on the learner's zone of proximal development. If the material is too easy, the students won't learn anything and could become bored. If the material presented is too hard or past their current level, the students can become frustrated and give up. It is best to provide materials that are at the student's current level, and pre-teach or address any issues that might be confusing beforehand.
