Modals give meaning to the main verb. For example, a child could ask if she or she can get ice cream or a child could say he or she must get ice cream. Although it might not be effective, saying must over could would say that something is required to happen. There are many different modals with different meanings. If the child was given the ice cream, it could be said in passive voice that ice cream was given to child, or it could be said in active voice that the child ate ice cream. A game could be made out of potential scenarios to teach a class these ideas, such as with the traffic signs mentioned in the unit.
