In this unit we looked at testing and evaluating and their usefulness for evaluating students' levels and progress as well as the various external exams they may be preparing for. I learned about the different types of tests used: placement (to determine at what level the student should enter a course), diagnostic (to show strengths and weaknesses), progress (periodic tests of the 4 skills that determine what has been retained and forgotten as well as areas of class weakness), practice (mainly to prepare for external exams such as TOEFL), and external proficiency (which may be general such as the Cambridge Suite tests, business such as TOEIC, or academic such as TOEFL or IELTS). Ongoing feedback helps the student know their own level and progress. We can use tutorials, student evaluations, and tests to assess the language level, but sometimes their are more formal tests that are compulsory depending on the school.
