This unit discusses assessing students' language levels. This can be done through tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Tutorials can be done individually or as a group. Evaluation by students can be done through written questionnaires or in a guided discussion as a class. There are a few different tests discussed in this unit. Placement tests are done prior to the course to place students in groups according to their language levels. Diagnostic tests are done at the beginning of the course to show what students know and don't know at the beginning. Progress tests are done periodically (depending on the school and teacher) to see where students are at in their learning and what they may need to work on further. Outside of the class there are external examinations. Practice tests may be given during the class to help prepare students, but they should follow the format and structure of the external examination they are preparing for. Some general external examinations are the TOEFL, IELTS, and TEIC. Cambridge assessments are other external examinations, which are the \"world's leading range of certificates.\" There are many different categories of Cambridge assessments such as general English, skills for life, and business English.
