This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit focuses on very common problems we might have in the classroom, such as reluctant students, or students using their native language instead of English. It also covers some common situations that might cause a challenge for the teacher, such as large classes, and classes with students of various English levels. The unit provides many reminders to not give into common teacher pitfalls (like avoiding listening materials or assuming student intentions) and instead to find ways to overcome the challenge so students can get the most from your class. For example, a common pitfall of mine ? teaching a monolingual class ? is that I sometimes use the student?s native language to hurry things along. This unit reminded me not to give into this pitfall and to instead use other strategies that maximize English usage (for example, I should make sure my English explanation is clear and simple instead of falling back on their native language).
