I learned the importance of receptive and productive skills for language learners. Teachers must choose texts that are appropriate for students. Some texts should be used for purposeful reading while others can be used merely for entertainment. There are also different reading techniques to meet different reading goals. For example, a student who is only interested in their horoscope sign, would simply scan the horoscope. A students who is interested in the general ideas of a scientific text would skim the article. We must be purposeful in the texts we select and clear in what we want students to gain from the texts.
