In order for a class to proceed smoothly, it is important that the teacher be in charge and have some sort of plan for what should happen when. In general, the teacher should first get the whole class interested in the lesson that is about to take place. This is called the Engage stage and the teacher can use tools like games or drawings or music. After that comes the Study part where everyone focuses on how the language is constructed. Maybe a worksheet can be handed out. And finally comes the Activate stage where students are encouraged to use as freely as possible the language that they have just learnt plus what they have learnt in previous lessons.
