Assessing students using exams is the best way to determine the success of the class and the students. What exams are to be given depend upon what point in time the class is and the progress of the class. Normally a teacher will give a diagnostic exam at the start of the class to assess what the students already know. This will set a basis for the rest of the class. During the term the teacher normally gives practice tests and progress tests to determine what the students know and the success of the lessons. In addition it encourages students to review and revise. Some teachers opt to have a formal exam at the end or the term (or end of the year), that is longer. There are additional exams for business, other jobs and certifications.
