There are four skills in language: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Reading and listening are classified as receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive. We all read and listen for 2 basic reasons, for a purpose and for entertainment value. In order to understand what is read and/or heard we have to develop skills such as predicting, scanning (quickly looking through for specific information), skimming (to glean the general idea), looking for detailed information and be able to make deductions from the context. To overcome certain problems while teaching another language we can pre-teach vocabulary in order for students to get the basic idea. We can also choose content of interest to student thus creating interest and finally give appropriate tasks i.e challenging but achievable.
