Receptive and productive skills are equally important in learning a new language. Most of the time all 4 skills will be be incorporately in one lesson due to time limit and balance of students' receptivity. In the context of Hong Kong schools, I realise that the teaching of English usually emphasise more on reading and writing than listening and speaking, resulting in students' decreased performances in these two areas. This might be due to the proportion difference in assessment of the skills, and owing to the fact that teachers simply don't have enough time to allocate resource and time, the stress on reading and writing outweighs listening and speaking. In view of this, I think local schools can make sure of extra curricular time or designated activities to increase practise chances on listening and speaking.
