The Past Tense in English is composed of 4 parts. The Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect and the Past Perfect Continuous. These four tenses each convey a certain aspect of the past tense. Past Simple is arguably is simplest in its usage and can start by illustrating a past action. In class this can easily be done with miming. Past continuous is a past action that had been occurring, useful techniques for this include asking students about the days before. Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous appear to be for more advanced learners of the language, in application at least. The Past Perfect Continuous in particular is a somewhat esoteric and specific usage in English, but none the less all are important to know.
