Unit 11 covers the receptive skills of reading and listening, and the productive skills of speaking and writing. The unit explains the reasons for each of the skills and how to effectively teach them in the classroom, especially the much more difficult productive skills. Knowing that there are two reasons, ?For a Purpose? and ?For Entertainment? helps the teacher effectively plan activities that will engage the students. Understanding cultural pre-existing knowledge is also something I found interesting but never really thought about in the classroom. The unit also presents a number of techniques to overcome challenges within each of the four skills; choose interesting material, create interest, pre-teach, vary the material, use the material to practice different skills, use realistic comprehension tasks, and incorporate activate phases that naturally lead on from the text.
