This unit discusses the productive skills, which are speaking and writing. The teacher needs to promote both accuracy and fluency in his lessons, as both are equally important. Accuracy is generally practiced during controlled activities where the students' word choice is limited by the teacher in a teacher-led activity, such as drilling. This would take place during the study phase of the lesson. Fluency is generally practiced during creative communication activities, where the students have more freedom in generating something to say. This occurs during the engage phase of the lesson and can include activities such as discussions, debates or role play. It is important to encourage speaking during class through activities such as pair work or group work, and giving students adequate time to prepare what they will say can help soothe nervousness and promote more participation.
