There are four basic skills we are all using while learning any language, and they can be divided into two groups. First one are Receptive skills ( reading and listening), and Productive skills ( speaking and Writing).
When we are listening we are often using mixture of two main reasons - purpose and/or entertainment.
When we are reading we can use several different skills - Predictive, Scanning, Skimming, Detail reading, or we can simply Deduct from the context of what we red.
When we are teaching reading and listening skills there are few several different things e need to take care of : language we are going to teach ( word length, sentence length, and number of unfamiliar words), Pre-teach vocabulary, selection of the text we are going to use, selection of the topic to be interesting enough go motivate students to engage in learning, and careful selection of the tasks we are going to use with students to help them learn and improve their reading and listening skills.
