The use of course book and lesson material to teach English play a crucial role in the development of materials and execution of a lesson plan. There are both advantages and disadvantages to using a course book, such as already offering a structured approach with varied skills, but a disadvantage could be monotony or already expecting certain content by the student. There are many opportunities for the teacher to adapt and modify what will be taught based on the course book and on the student audience. More advanced students will also benefit from using authentic materials, such as a newspaper, book, magazine article, news clip or a restaurant menu.
