Unit 11 differentiates receptive skills(reading and listening) from productive skills(speaking and writing). The unit continues on to discuss various types of reading and listening, each involving specific motivations and specialized receptive skills. Finally, teaching strategies for receptive skill lessons are presented, considering the selection of appropriate and engaging material and comprehension-promoting tasks.
A major concern in teaching using text and/or dialogue is the introduction of unknown vocabulary and structures. The section on striking a balance between pre-teaching and allowing students to discover new language on their own, in context, was both interesting and informative.
