There are 2 groups of lesson materials in teaching, authentic materials comprise of programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films on video etc.
Created materials are crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, picture stories and so on.
Authentic materials are more real, interesting and motivating. Students gain confidence when they understand the materials. They can be geared to the interests of a particular group of students. Created materials however have to be graded to the level of the students.
Having course books during lessons is essential but need to use them selectively, not advisable to use for the whole lesson. It is also important to explore ways to match the book to the needs of the students.
