I found this unit to be quite liberating in terms of introducing the idea that we don't always have to stick with the course book for our lesson plans. Until this course, I had no formal ESL teacher training (apart from a course in linguistics and phonology), so I used to cling pretty firmly to the lesson plan provided by the course material. However, by the end of my last term in Japan, I did notice the students starting to get a little bored with the material. Luckily, my term ended before this boredom got too pronounced. I did try to vary things somewhat, but this time I will probably do this more--particularly now that I have a little more experience, and now the permission to do so!
