There are a number of ways to assess a student's language level:?tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. There are five different kinds of tests: placement (level tests), diagnostic, progress, practice and proficiency tests. Placement tests are designed to allow teachers to assess the level of new students using multiple choice questions and increasingly more difficult verbal questions. Progress tests are often required by schools or language centers, and are useful to the teacher to show areas of class weakness. Diagnostic tests are used similarly to placement tests, but are more extensive. Practice tests mimic the structure of external examinations. External proficiency tests have three categories: general English, business and academic.
