The ways that a teacher can assess student's English proficiency is through Tutorials, Evaluation by the Student, and tests. There are various different types of tests that can be given at different stages in the course. Placement tests are given prior to the course to place the student in the appropriate level. Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of the course to found out what the students know and don't know to assist the teacher in the lesson planning. Progress tests are given throughout the course to check what the students retained during the course or what needs further review. Achievement tests are internal. External examinations are done by outside organizations. Proficiency tests determine student's language proficiency. Practice tests are done so the student's can practice the format and check how close they are to the required standard of an external exam. External Examinations include TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC. Cambridge Assessment has various categories of exams.
