Lesson planning to me is very important. As a teacher (in progress), I have experienced the need for lesson planning, and the effect lack of planning can have on instruction. The main reason to plan a lesson is so that you can keep track of the things you want to focus on, and the general order in which they should be taught. This helps keep your thoughts in order, and can remind you of topics that need to be covered. Lesson plans are general maps for an activity, so even if you stray from the plan a little, it can either get the class back on track or you can go off on a different tangent and come back to the topics that need to be covered later. The lesson pan also helps you assess/evaluate whether or not the students reached the goals you set for them, or help you assess which parts of the lesson were affective or not.
