This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 20 briefly covered common problem situations that teachers will probably face if not daily then at some point in their career. First lessons were covered and stressed the importance of building rapport with the class and finding out about the students, their needs and wants, and of course, determining their level of English.
Large classes were also included and the particular problems of having everyone participate. Some ideas to use are worksheets, choral repetition, pair/group work and appointing group leaders.
Another area covered was use of native language. A running theme throughout the course was to limit its use and as a teacher to communicated only in English.
Reluctant students I learned require an approach of limiting embarrassing situations through pair work and role plays among others.
Difficulties with listening texts seem to be very common and one must build a solid base of receptive skills because listening to English and understanding it is an essential task.
