This unit was an eye opener. Modal auxiliary verbs are really essential to communication. From asking permission to expressing obligations, these little words add so many of the niceties that make communication pleasant and move people to action. I have been using phrasal verbs all my life in the form of 1940s slang without knowing it. Identifying subjects and objects of verbs in sentences is still a little tricky, but I'm getting better at it now. I also realized that non-defining relative clauses are one of my favorite items to use in speaking with people. This all feels a lot like playing the piano by ear and then going back and learning the terms for all of the thing you know, use, and understand, but didn't know what to call.
