This unit breaks down key aspects of the lesson planning process and provides relevant examples for TEFL courses. As an English teacher, I use a mix of formal and informal lesson planning. Lesson plans should be structured enough to provide evidence of student growth, but flexible enough to adapt for student differences. Using the ESA lesson planning approach, lessons should begin with a form of engagement, often by informal discussion. The study phase may include multiple forms of instruction, including a mix of direct instruction and guided learning worksheets/activities. The final activation phase should give students the opportunity to apply their newly learned skills in a practical way. Lesson planning is a highly important aspect of teaching.
