This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit discussed the importance of pronunciation and phonology. It talked about how some teachers may not emphasize teaching the rise and fall of speech, for example, because even some native speakers are not able to detect it. They often focus on individual sounds, but the most effective teacher will ensure students are given experience in the full pronunciation of words and sentences.
Phonology teaches how the sounds are made, and is important for students to know in order to sound as natural as possible when speaking. To teach the individual sounds associated with phonology, visuals, peer dictation, exaggerated demonstrations, and tongue twisters can be used.
Some teachers teach pronunciation for an entire lesson, others may teach for a small amount of time each lesson, and others may only teach it as they need to. It really depends on the class' needs, and it's the task of the teacher to really know when and how to teach the best for the benefit of the class.
