This unit presented a variety of different problems that teachers are likely to confront as well as some solutions to those problems. Significant attention was given to the importance of attending to student affect, both by establishing rapport when you first meet a class of students and by using warm-ups to engage students interest and heighten motivation. The challenge of teaching mixed level groups was also addressed. Solutions included splitting the class into ability based groups, pairing low and high-level students together, and giving different tasks based on the same materials. Class size can be a challenge, but can be overcome by using group activities and pair work, while avoiding individual activities, and reluctant students can come to enjoy English if they are given plenty of practice, time to prepare, and low-stress activities like pair work and role-plays.
