Pronunciation is often neglected in English teaching mainly because English teachers lack the training and confidence in this area due to their prior education. However, an effective teacher should definitely integrate it in the course. Phonology is used to indicate the whole sound system of a particular language. Stress, rhythm and intonation all play an important part in this system. Intonation carries the message in a sentence and its pattern can be either rise/fall, fall/rise or flat depending on what we want to indicate. It is particularly important in questioning, agreeing, or disagreeing, or conforming statements, as well as in the expression of emotions or feelings. With falling intonation you indicate that you have finished what you want to say, with rising intonation you indicate that you need confirmation, you demand a reply or you intend to say more. Furthermore, the level of intonation can be flat as well indicating that the speaker does not really have much to say and perhaps does not want to communicate. A sentence can be interpreted in many ways and stress helps to determine which part of the sentence has the main emphasis. When it comes to pronunciation we should not forget about IPA. Both the teacher and the students should be familiar with the international phonemic alphabet (a set of symbols that represent the way English speakers put sounds together to form words) since it is a great help to pronounce any word correctly.
