This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In Unit 3 we look at teaching methods, theories and techniques. Starting with Grammar Translation which consists of comparing the second language with the learners native language. I learnt that this can be a drawback as it may be reliant on the teacher having a good knowledge of that language also. We also covered Audio - Lingualism (a method based upon behavioural theories. language drills , habit and conditioning) Task based learning (accomplishment over accuracy) Communicative language teaching (roleplaying is an example of this , focusing on the importance of language function) Community language teaching ( student centred , group work) 'the silent way' ( a way for the students to discover the language on their own) I feel I may find this an unnatural approach as the engagement might be lost with individual study. Suggestopaedia was another method presented ( focus on the student comfort, within a stress free environment) and finally The Lexical Approach (using words and phrases as the building blocks , avoiding strict grammar)
A large chunk of the unit covered ESA - Engage , Study and Activate . Viewed as one of the most successful ways of teaching a foreign language. Patchwork style and Boomerang were also presented. I would like to learn more about this form of teaching
