This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The current unit addressed pronunciation and phonology. The various subtopics included intonation, stress, the phonemic alphabet and the articulation and manner of speech. In studying this unit, I realized how I have rarely examined the rise and fall of my speech or the physical location of how the sounds of my language are produced. This unit gave me a great appreciation of the challenge that English learners face in not only acquiring vocabulary and grammar -- but also the physical movements of the mouth that are required to produce the learned vocabulary as well as the cultural understanding of the rhythms that are unique to English. The phonemic alphabet will prove invaluable to me as a resource in teaching pronunciation to students. The use of peer dictation and the use of visuals are useful techniques as well.
