This unit has made me realise how much of my understanding of tenses came from everyday usage and not from school. I was aware of different tenses before I started teaching, but through teaching English, my awareness of the different tenses is more prominent. In a classroom setting,I can see how it could be difficult to teach certain past tenses to students if one does not speak their native language. In order to teach the more complex past tenses, I usually revert to the students native language to explain them. This unit has given ideas for activities to get students to understand the usage of each tense without reverting to their native language.
