This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Course books are the set of teaching materials used for teaching and learning a language. These usually includes student's book, workbook, teacher's book, cassettes, videos, and other reading books like test books, learner's dictionary and vocabulary flashcards. There are some issues among educators with regards to the use of course books. So, in this unit, it provides information as to examine the issues and to let the teacher see the advantages and disadvantages of using course books. Thus, with this, teachers are more abreast as to how to choose and analyze course books that is suited to their learners.
It should also be noted that materials are divided into two groups. First, the authentic materials like newspapers, brochures, songs, etc., are real. Thus, it provides students with more confidence to tackle real life material. So, it is likely to be more appealing to the students because it interesting, topical, and motivating. Second is the created material. These are the crosswords, word search puzzles, flashcards, and many others. They are usually designed by the teachers as supplementary materials or replacement from a course book.
At the end, it must be noted, that using both materials is beneficial, as long as the teacher is aware of how to make use of all the available resources. A good teacher, then, knows how to supplement the course book with extra material, may it be authentic or created to reinforce understanding and learning.
