Speaking and writing are called productive skills because here students do tasks that require them to produce the language. In some other sources, they are referred to as active skills?skills that are equally important like all other language skills. These abilities are crucial as they give students more opportunities to practice communicating in real-life situations. It is important to note that the speaking and writing proficiency of the students are the barometers to finding out what they have learned. Accuracy (production of correct language) and fluency (effective use of the language) are measured here. Therefore, it is equally important that students be given enough opportunities to express themselves. Activities might be in the form of pair- or group-work. Carefully planned tasks should be meaningful and purposeful, and should give students plenty of controlled and guided practice opportunities to improve pronunciation (speaking skills), grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, even layout and style.
