In this section of the TEFL course, I have found out the basic information about the various tests conducted to analyze the degree of the English language expertise. Overall, the latter may be divided into 4 main categories: 1) placement tests (empowering teachers to place new learners to the right class); 2) progress tests (conducted after a particular portion of educational material has been covered); 3) diagnostic tests (normally taking place at the beginning of the new course, and showing the teacher what areas of study should be given special attention to); and 4) practice tests (aimed at preparing to external examinations, i.e. TOEFL, FCE, CAE, CPE, etc.). The latter may be presented by Cambridge assessment, conducted by the Cambridge University, and general external examinations (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS, etc.). Within the vast abundance of all the available exams, one must single out the Skills for Life Certificate (normally taken by people who have repatriated to the UK), and the Business English Certificate and BULATS certificate (aimed at those who need English in their professional life).
