This lesson was useful in terms of analyzing what the appropriate use of coursebooks is in an ESL classroom. In some classes textbooks will be provided for the teacher and students to use. In others, the teacher decides which book to use. And in other classes course materials are not necessarily provided to the teacher/class. The teacher must decide if they want to rely heavily on a book or if they want to take more time to gather or prepare other teaching materials. There are advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, and often teachers use a combined approach where they use a textbook, but adapt it to the class or provide some supplementary materials. Providing supplementary materials usually makes classes more interesting, since this allows more freedom and a less predictable structure (which can be boring). It also allows the teacher to tailor materials to the class.
