The topic of Unit 19 was the various types of special groups a teacher can encounter. Many of the previous units focused on adult classes, however these special groups include beginners (one of the most enjoyable and rewarding groups, according to many teachers), individual students, children, and specific purpose learners (including business students). In addition, the unit covered the benefits of multilingual classes, which force students to speak more in English as they don?t all share the same mother tongue, and guidelines for managing monolingual classes. Some of my key takeaways were to not overcorrect beginner-level students (which is discouraging), to prepare more material than you think you will need for individual lessons (as those students tend to progress through lessons quicker than a class would), and to work through a needs analysis with business learners (so as to attempt to address individual needs, while focusing on the needs of the group as a whole).
