Teachers can assess students? language level by tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. During the course, there are four different tests that can be given: placement, diagnostic, progress and practice. A placement test is given at the beginning of the course to determine what class one will be placed in by their language ability. A diagnostic test is the same as a placement test expect it is more extensive. A progress tests are given periodically during the course to see what has been remembered and forgotten. Lastly, a practice test prepares students to take external exams. General external examinations such as TOEFL, IETLS and TOEIC determine if their English level is acceptable to enter foreign universities and jobs. The Cambridge assessments are very similar but offer tests at different levels of English as well. I learned that there are a lot of external tests that one can take that not only determines their level of English but if they can go to an English speaking country to study or work.
