Reading and listening are known as receptive skills as opposed to speaking and writing, which are productive skills. There are a number of different reasons and purposes why we read or listen and different skills for each purpose. For example, reading a novel is reading for entertainment, and one would not likely use the skimming technique for this text. When choosing a text for students, it is important to choose a topic they will be interested in and one that is appropriate for their skill level. If there are new words in the text, pre-teaching the difficult ones will help students comprehend the text. Allowing students to discover the meanings of some words from context is also important.
