This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Types of ESL classes are broadly: Beginners (that can range from students who need work on alphabet & basic literacy skills to a false beginner who may have been exposed to English but hasn't retained much), Individual students (i.e. one-to-one lessons that can be further customised to the student but have no classroom dynamic), Children (Young Learners), Business English or English for Specific Purposes (could be one-to-one, in-company group or in-school group), Monolingual or Multilingual class.
Each type has their own advantages and challenges and the course needs to be tailor-made accordingly. For e.g teaching a multilingual class, i.e. a class with students from different nationalities would generally entail different mother tongues, therefore the only common language amongst them being English. On the other hand, a multilingual class may mean students with the same mother tongue, therefore having similar issues with learning English. There could be discipline issues while teaching children and could be a challenge teaching tired adults who have had been at work all day.
In every group however, an ESL teacher should refrain from using the mother tongue and can prepare a lesson using the Engage-Study-Activate methodology.
