This unit focused on listening and reading skills. It addressed the importance of these skills and the way in which they are used. This was a particularly useful section. Teachers must encourage students and help them practice different types of listening and reading when teaching English.
This unit went on to describe some of the problems that may arise in class. But it focused on ways to boost students? confidence when reading and speaking. I particularly enjoyed the suggestion of including authentic materials. I do play popular music for my classes, but I hadn?t thought of bringing in authentic reading materials.
At the end of the unit, we were provided a sample lesson plan as well as some reading activities. I think this unit is very useful. However, I am struck by how disadvantaged language learners are from the cultural context of authentic materials. I am not sure how to prepare students for this type of disconnect.
