Unit 16 deals with conditional and reported speech. Conditional speech is speech which includes a condition. The condition is created by the use of If or When. \"If I receive my allowance I will buy some ice cream\". The ice cream cannot be purchased without the allowance having been received. The conditional phrase can be used to indicate a current situation as being the result of a past action (or lack of action). \"If I had studied harder, I would be a doctor today.\" Reported speech provides a listener with information regarding a conversation between other people. \"What did the say about your stolen car?\" \"They said (that) they were looking for it.\" An interesting unit for a native English speaker, in that I have used Conditional and Reported speech all my life, but never knew what it was called in grammatical terms.
